Easter customs

Easter is the celebration accompanied by many customs and traditions. In addition to the still well-known dyed Easter eggs or Easter Monday (to be known in Poland as Wet Monday or Śmigus Dyngus), there are also the rites that have survived only in very few homes. There are lots of old Polish Easter traditions, one in particular to be mentioned here refers to the attention paid to colors and their meaning.

Dyed Easter eggs used to be put into a big basket and before the Easter breakfast was commenced, the members of the family gathered to take one random dyed egg. This custom was usually initiated by the family senior. Each color carried a different meaning for the future, for example: violet used to foretell strength and persistence, blue meant health whereas red color was to bring love and victory.
